Is getting multiple backlinks from the same referring domain bad for SEO?

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question that came about talking to some link builders online.

So, some link building agencies sell backlinks placed on the footer of different sites effectively causing the domain they are pointing to to get do-follow backlinks from every single page on their website pointing to the same target page.

Considering how Google's core and spam updates keep getting stricter and stricter, is it possible to be penalised for such a practice? Obviously they can keep one do-follow link and turn the rest no-follow or remove the rest of the links from other pages in their website, but say this is not an option. What I'm more concerned about is whether Google could read these as spam links or not.

Let me know what you think.

    • Thank you for your response Dylan, based on what you've described above, wouldn't it make sense for Google to penalize the website issuing the backlinks instead of the domain they are pointing to? Assuming there's no proof that links are being bought, this could have also been an attempt by a competitor to get a specific website penalised since other than disavowing links, the target domain does not have any other way to remove links pointing to their website. Unless Google would end up penalizing both domains regardless?

I would suggest you to focus on organic, high-quality link building strategies that align with google standards. because according to me buying backlinks for a quick boost, it's crucial to stay with google guidelines and placing do-follow links in footers across multiple sites can be noticed by google and may trigger penalties.

  • No, not at all, if website is not from restricted niche markets. The best example is posting or reply at this forum. Signature containing links and with each reply links attched, does not means Google will penalize you.

Links from same IP will ignore. Many webmasters who are providing designing development services, add his company name and URL at footer of website, does not means Google will penalize that site.

Just keep in mind that link should be on good and reputed website, backlinks from multiple spammy websites can hurt your ranking.

    • Thank you for clearing my doubt, I was about to post the same question that signature links are good or bad.
  • It all depends on Google. There's no hard and fast rule for link building. However, it is recommended to focus on nature and organic work by targeting user intent instead of Google or any other search engine.
  • Yes, it is possible to be penalized for having backlinks placed on the footers of different sites. This is because Google sees this as a type of "link scheme", which is a manipulative practice used to artificially inflate the ranking of a website in search results.
  • when i do research mainly competitor analisis, on every site i have looked at they do have mutiple backlinks, but its not normally from the same domain, it is backlinks from various sources, its a good idea to have them from many different sources for better traffic, i dont think it would harm seo though but i am not expert in this field, hope this helps
